Comments: Giant Miscanthus is one of the largest of the ornamental grasses that can be grown in this region. The leaves are deep green with a white midvein. The entire plant turns a buckskin color in winter and should not be cut down until early spring due to its winter ornamental value as well as the food and shelter it provides for birds and other winter animals. Giant Miscanthus spreads by extremely tough rhizomes; it can be a vigorous spreader but is not as invasive as bamboo. It is native to the Asian Pacific islands. Shown here in January next to a 5'3" human (me).

All gardens are Zone 5b with patches of Zones 4, 5, and 6.
