Many of the sources listed here (in alpha order, so I ain't looking like I'm playing favorites) are ones we
personally use, at least from time to time. All are well worth contacting or visiting. I admit I'm pretty
enthusiastic about a lot of them, but I'm not intending to advertise. Okay, you believe that?

A note to nursery owners and other garden companies: If you would like to be added to this portal, just drop me a line at mareltrout@geocities.com. I'll be glad to review your Web site, magazine, or whatever for addition.

Sources of Plants

The Antique Rose Emporium
9300 Lueckenmeyer Rd.
Brenham, TX 77833
(800) 441-0002
FAX: (409) 836-0928
We've gotten a number of antique roses from here, and despite their hailing from Texas, they have proven quite hardy in our Zone 5 gardens.

Appalacian Wildflower Nursery
723 Honey Creek Road
Reedsville, PA 17804
(717) 667-6998
A teeny tiny nursery owned by a charming, softspoken, and wise fellow named Dan. There are plants there I've never seen anywhere else except in books.

Black Bear Nursery
Wholesale/Retail
Windburne Road
Windburne, PA
(814) 345-6953; (814) 345-5878
FAX (814) 345-1732
We've gotten hundreds of perennials and woody ornamentals at this nursery. Good prices, good stock. Just take some tags or a notepad, because most of the plants aren't tagged with their names.

Burpee Seeds and Plants
W. Atlee Burpee & Co.
Warminster, PA 18974
(800) 888-1447
FAX: (800) 487-5530
Customer Service: (800) 333-5808
www.burpee.com

Of course we get things from Burpee. Any self-respecting Pennsylvanian does.

My very first flower garden was grown entirely from packets of Burpee seeds.

Cyndi Johnson's Ornamental Plant Catalog List
www.mertus.org/gardening/cat16/f26cat.cfm

Cyndi did a lot of hard work to construct this list. She even has catalogs listed there of companies that have no discernable Web site, such as Limerock Ornamental Grasses.

Daylily Discounters
1 Daylily Plaza
Alachua, FL 32615
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST Monday-Friday
(904) 462-1539
orders@daylilydiscounters.com
www.daylilydiscounters.com
My favorite place to get daylilies. Nice, fat stock with tubers like bananas.  I'm in Zone 5, and have never had a problem with DD's stock, even though it hails from Florida. Besides, daylilies are practically indestructible.

Eastern Plant Specialites
Box 226 Georgetown, Maine 04548
Phone/Fax (732) 382-2508
Good prices and several choices of sizes for bare-root woody ornamentals. Has Saskatoon tree, which is big plus. Stock is big and thrifty, and arrives in excellent shape.

gardencom.com This is a Web portal with an extensive list of gardening sources.

Phone: 1-888-323-1333
FAX: 561-495-7383
www.rareflora.com
This nursery offers some amazing, cool, and unusual tropical plants, plus lots of free information. A fine resource for garden plants and house/conservatory plants (for us snowbound northerners).

Garden Tools by Lee Valley

Ogdenburg, NY 13669-6780
Orders: (800) 871-8158
FAX Orders: (800) 513-7885
Customer Service: (800) 267-8735

I've gotten some extremely well-made, practically indestructible gardening tools from here at a price I can stand. Lots of other homeowner-type tools here, too.

Gardener's Supply Company
128 Intervale Road
Burlington, Vermont 05401-2850
(800) 863-1700
www.gardeners.com
I've gotten a lot of good tools and supplies from this catalog through the years -- everything from metal plant markers and engraving dremel to a gardener's radio with a built in generator and solar panels, so I can listen to my alternative rock while prying out dandelions, and I don't need to keep recharging batteries. This company also has the distinction of providing the friendliest automatic telephone ordering system I've ever encountered. It's worth calling them up just to listen.

Henry Field's Seed & Nursery Co.
415 North Burnett
Shenandoah, Iowa 51602

www.henryfields.com
Another old company; it's been around since 1892. Great prices and good stock. My parents bought a 'Crimson King' Norway maple from HF back in the early 1951. Today the tree stands 50 feet tall. Field's stock is a bit smaller than, say, what you get from White Flower Farm. But if you're willing to take the time to grow it out, you can get some choice items at affordable prices.

J. W. Jung Seed Co.
335 S. High St.
Randolph, WI 53957-0001
We've gotten a lot of  very affordable and nice plants from this nursery through the years, including a veritable forest of Eupatorium fistulosum, the tall, native kind. It's an old company, founded in 1907.

Limerock Ornamental Grasses
70 Sawmill Road
Port Matilda, PA 16870
(814) 692-2272
FAX: (814) 692-9848
Limerock@Juno.com
www.limerockgrasses.com
We get almost all our ornamental grasses at this beautiful local nursery (it's about 20 miles from our place). Limerock is one of the premiere wholesale sources of ornamental grasses nationwide. Those grasses for sale at the nursery you go to -- there's a good chance they came from Limerock.

(916) 369-ROSE

You'll find a wide selection of roses here, including climbers, ground covers, miniatures, hierlooms, moderns, and English roses.

Miller Nurseries
J.E. Miller Nurseries, Inc.
5060 West Lake Road
Canandaigua, N.Y. 14424
(800) 836-9630
www.millernurseries.com
We get all our fruit trees, brambles, and other ornamentals and edibles from here. For culinary plants at a price we can stand, we have found that Millers' is hard to beat. When their stock arrives at your doorstep, it's gigantic and healthy -- and hardy as hell since they're a stone's throw from Canada.

Plant Delights Nursery
9241 Sauls Road
Raleigh, NC 27603
(919) 772-4749
FAX: (919) 662-0370
tony@plantdel.com

www.plantdel.com
I learned about this place in an article in Horticulture magazine a while back and after buying several orders, I am hooked. The stock is big, meaty, and itchin' to grow. I've been especially happy with the hostas.

Antique and Extraordinary Roses, as well as perennials. This source has been highly recommended to me by a friend of mine who is an old rose expert. I recently ordered bronze fennel from this source; I'll let you know what I think of their stock very soon...but if my friend's stock from there is any indication, this place is a winner.

Wayside Gardens
1 Garden Lane
Hodges, South Carolina 29695-0001
(800) 845-1124
www.waysidegardens.com
I buy less from here than I used to, but it can be a good source for unusual finds. The catalog always serves as beautiful and informative reference material.

White Flower Farm
P.O. Box 50
Litchfield, Connecticut 06759-0050
(800) 503-9624

One of my all-time favorite sources for perennials, roses, trees, and shrubs. The catalog is sheer garden porn, and I'm always happy with the big, beautiful stock.
